2009 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Les Setilles

White Burgundy.  Leflaive.

This is a benchmark example of what Chardonnay can do when in the right hands.  This is a wine to be served just shy of room temperature (57 - 62 degrees).

Nose has a smell like the outside of a ripe lemon with the underpinnings of grey and white stone minerality.  There are also some higher tone candy notes that waft through the glass, followed by a kind of pine sol kerosene richness and lemon blossoms.  One of the wonders of Burgundy is how the wines are dynamic and difficult to pin down.

The palate strikes the perfect balance between richness and austerity, somehow possessing both at the same time.  Grey, chalky minerality strikes the palate first and then clean, linear lemon cuts through the mid-palate and persists into the finish.  The palate is long and fairly well balanced.  This is not the most delicate, powerful or elegant wine of all time, but it is a great representation of Burgundy and a spectacular drinker.
