J. Wilkes Pinot 01

This is a wine that hails from one of the best vineyard sources in Santa Barbara County; the Bien Nacido Vineyard.  Specifically, Block Q.  It has 10 years of age on it and is showing really well.  The winemaker, Jeff Wilkes passed away in December of 2010, after spending almost 20 years in the wine business.  He was well known and respected throughout the industry and made great wines.

Notes: the nose shows off its age in a sophisticated kind of way.  There's a little bottle stink to it, (bouquet) which I love; it shows coco and black cherries and the nose has a glycerine rim, and tangerine citrus backbone.  It has evolved great secondary characteristics, so take a couple minutes to enjoy them before diving in.

The palate is light to medium bodied in terms of weight, but it has a full flavor, great texture and is soft and sleek.  The flavor profile shows off darker fruits like blueberry with hints of mint and coco accented with some Indian spices.  The finish is moderate in length and is lifted and has a rhubarb pie filling flavor to it.

This wine could be looked at as an example of what a good California producer can do with good California fruit.
