Blackbird Vineyards Illustration 2007

Blackbird Vineyards is located in the heart of Oakville, in the middle of the valley floor.  They have managed to enter the market as a highly coveted brand, and accomplished this around the time that the economy was tanking.  After tasting the wine, and reading a little bit about their story, I can see why.

The Blackbird Vineyards produce Merlot and Cab Franc based wines, which is a niche that might provide a more of a toe hold than the Cabernet market.  A toe hold is all these folks needed, because they've done a good job of producing a singular, interesting, pure and delectable wine.  It is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% CF, 5% CS, 5% Malbecc.

NOTES: We decanted this wine for several hours before drinking, which served it well.  The wine is a very straight forward and pure expression of Merlot combined with tons of oak.  If it weren't such a high quality toasty oak it would be a flaw, but they've managed to put it together in a way that people will talk about for years to come.  The wine has wonderful balance and has the structure for aging.  The fruits are darker, plum, black cherries, and are creamy and linear in a pure way.  With some time to develop bouquet, this wine is only going to get better for the next 5-10 years.
