2007 Dierberg Pinot Noir Santa Maria

This wine comes from the Dierberg's Orcutt Rd. Ranch vineyard in Santa Maria.  It has a showy blue fruit nose that is backed by savory, sagey, mineray and spice notes.  Aromatically there is a lot going on with this wine; as it had a chance to open in the glass it started to show pine needles on the nose as well.  The palate has a kind of 'wound up' feel to it like it is coiled and ready to pounce, but is soft and starting to open.  It has nice acidity and the tannins are exceptionally long chain and woody.

One thing that is interesting about the Pinot Noir winemaking at Dierberg; they don't employ punch-down's during fermentation, they pump the wine over like most other red varietals are made in California.  Interesting...
