Nebbiolo Tasting

Tasting groups are fun.  Recently we got together with some of our local wine geeks for an evening of Nebbiolo.  The resulting tasting was great fun, educational, and completely worth drinking.  There were some serious wines in the line up as well as a ringer from California.

The Barolo's stole the show, and my personal pick of the litter was probably the Aldo Conterno Granbussia followed closely by the Cannubi.  It was tough because the wines were significantly different in style and both drinking well.  They both fall into the more modern category of wines when judging by Italian standards.  The Conterno seemed to have a warp drive level of complexity.  The Cannubi had spectacular fruit and was a total show stopper.

The ringer of the group was the Palmina Nebbiolo 2004.  They get the fruit from the Sisquoc vineyard and aparantly the location of that vineyard is significantly cooler than the surrounding area.

Take a look at the notes on each of the wines we looked at below.  It was a tasting that I had to pry myself out of the chair from because the wines were beautiful and super fun to watch evolve.
