Honig Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

Rutherford could arguably be called the best part of California to grow Cabernet Sauvignon.  Honig produces a great wine for the money in the neighborhood of $35 - $40, and lies in the heart of this region.  Year in year out this house puts out a wine that delivers for the money.

The 2000 vintage was challenging for many producers in Napa.  Being a tough vintage to begin with this wine is showing quite nicely.  Honig Cabernet Sauvignon started off with a bright chocolate covered cherry nose with spice cake notes.  The wine is lighter in style, being medium bodied.  It has a good palate that is holding together nicely and consists of subdued rhubarb pie fruits and  candied orange peel.  There are hints of vanilla and a dusty quality to the nose... classic Rutherford.  This wine has some mileage on it but still had good acid and seems to be at a good point in its life cycle.  It was easy to drink and seemed to know its place at the table; not trying to be too big but not selling itself short either.

I wouldn't hold on to this wine for too much longer, it won't fall flat on its face but probably won't be improving with additional age going forward.
